American Secession Project
Secessionist.us
Active 2007.
“The charter of the American Secession Project is simple.  We desire to place the concept of secession in the mainstream of political thought.  Our intent is to proclaim that secession is a viable and legal right and a practical solution to contemporary problems. Secondly, we desire to build a coalition of groups seeking autonomy and independence within the current United States.  Mutual support for the concept of self-determination and secession will eventually benefit all groups seeking freedom.
“Secessionists come in all ethnic and cultural backgrounds colors and religious persuasions.  Secession is neither liberal nor conservative, it is a right that might be equally applied regardless of a group's persuasion. The folks that support a free California and an Independent Alaska certainly disagree on numerous issues, specifically environmental issues.  However the concept of supporting another in their bid to manage their own affairs is certainly a historic American (if not 20th century American) point of view.
“As such the project has and will attempt to represent each separatist, independence and secessionist group fairly and objectively. Our purpose is to establish that self-determination is a basic right and support all groups seeking self-determination and independence.”

“In answer to a growing swell of interest in realistic responses to the excesses of the present American empire, The Middlebury Institute has been launched by a group of activists and professionals to promote the serious study of separatism, secession, self-determination  and similar devolutionary trends and developments, on both national and international scales.
“We believe that, of the options open to those who would dissent from the actions and institutions of a government grown too big and unwieldy and its handmaiden corporate sponsors grown too powerful and corrupt, the only comprehensive and practical one is some form of separatism. Exploring this option is not a step to be taken lightly, because there are established forces that will hamper and resist, and yet it is a legal and viable enterprise, squarely in the American tradition, and of a piece with the worldwide devolutionary current that has seen the breakup of European empires (including the Soviet) and the expansion of the United Nations from 51 to 193 nations in sixty years.
“The Middlebury Institute hopes to foster a national movement in the United States that will:   place secession on the national political agenda,   encourage secessionist and separatist movements here and and abroad   develop communication among such existing and future groups,   create a body of scholarship to examine and promote the ideas of separatism,  and work carefully and thoughtfully for the ultimate task, the peaceful dissolution of the American empire.”

"Our Mission - We seek to promote a return to limited government and maximum liberty in the USA and around the world through decentralized confederation government combined with direct democracy. Our history shows that pure representative democracy, although required during earlier times of limited communications and travel has often failed to preserve liberty and limit the growth of government or its control by special interests.
"The Swiss Confederation Institute will educate the public on the benefits of expanded direct democracy with the right of referendum &  initiative in order for the citizens to curtail or introduce legislation and laws. We also favor the Swiss model of decentralized, limited confederation government as exists in Switzerland today and formerly in America's first government, The Articles of Confederation and later in the Constitution of the Confederate States of America.
"In addition, we advocate The Swiss concept of ‘Willensnation,’ a growth by attraction—the voluntary association of neighboring states, principalities, cities, and individuals that makes Switzerland a nation created by acts of the free will by voluntarily, peaceful, democratic devolution from other government structures. We believe many nations around the world including the United States of America would do well to study, understand and emulate the successful Swiss example. Aggressive war, growing religious extremism, terrorism, ethnic and religious bigotry and conflict, as well as the often heavy handed tyranny of majorities and special interests could be avoided and supplanted by the Swiss example of direct democracy and confederation.
"Our goal in the United States is  to educate the public on the benefits of a return to decentralized, limited confederation style government similar to the Articles of Confederation, America's first government established by our patriot Founding Fathers. In addition, we seek to promote Swiss style limited government around the world."

“The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) is a democratic, international membership organization. Its members are indigenous peoples, occupied nations, minorities and independent states or territories who have joined together to protect their human and cultural rights, preserve their environments, and to find non-violent solutions to conflicts which affect them. UNPO provides a legitimate and established international forum for member aspirations and assists its members in effective participation at an international level.
“Although UNPO members have different goals and aspirations, they share one condition – they are not represented in major international fora, such as the United Nations. As a result, their ability to participate in the international community and to have their concerns addressed by the global bodies mandated to protect human rights and address conflict, is limited.
“In today’s world, over 90 percent of conflicts are intrastate. UNPO was founded and designed to fill the gap left by today’s international system and its institutions. Notably, it is the members of the organization, the peoples who are most affected by the shortcomings of the international system, who have created the organization.”

“The Alaskan Independence Party can be summed up in just two words: ALASKA FIRST!
“Until we as Alaskans receive our Ultimate Goal, the AIP will continue to strive to make Alaska a better place to live with less government interference in our everyday lives.
“The Alaskan Independence Party's goal is the vote we were entitled to in 1958, one choice from among the following four alternatives:
        1) Remain a Territory.
        2) Become a separate and Independent Nation.
        3) Accept Commonwealth status.
        4) Become a State.
“The call for this vote is in furtherance of the dream of the Alaskan Independence Party's founding father, Joe Vogler, which was for Alaskans to achieve independence under a minimal government, fully responsive to the people, promoting a peaceful and lawful means of resolving differences.”

“FreeAlberta.com is a website whose main purpose is to accurately document and measure the costs of Alberta remaining in Canada. We believe that these costs are unacceptable. We demonstrate how peaceful and legal secession can be achieved, but also lay out the antecedent steps required prior to secession. Our vision of an independent Alberta, the most successful and prosperous nation on earth, will also be outlined. In short, we answer the questions why, when and how Alberta should become independent.
FreeAlberta.com has seen a remarkable growth in the past year. We expect to get over 50,000 hits this month [December 2006], a 300% increase year over year. This website has had over 500,000 hits since its inception. This growth is a testament to the magnitude of independence sentiment in Alberta. Our goal is to average one million hits per month. Advertising inquiries can be directed to the contact information below.
”In order to maintain an independent posture, FreeAlberta.com accepts no government funding or endowments. Contributions are received from foundations, corporations, and individuals. Other revenue is generated from the sale of advertising and promotional items. FreeAlberta.com does not have tax-exempt status, but we are planning to be incorporated as a tax-exempt corporation under the Alberta Societies Act in the near future.
”FreeAlberta.com was started as a labor of love by Albertans in 2001. We are based in Calgary, Alberta. We are not officially associated in any way with any political party. We are not officially associated with any business. We are not officially associated with the Government of Alberta. We are believers in the power of ideas. To us, the power of the idea that Alberta should become independent is an idea whose logic is irrefutable and whose time has come.”

Californians for Independence, as the name implies, is an organization that advocates for the Independence of California from the United States, but to assume that this is our one, or even most important, goal would be incorrect, for we here at Californians for Independence merely see secession as a method of improving the quality of life for all Californians, which is indeed our true goal.  In order to improve the standards of living for all Californians, our organization is involved in advocating for educational reform, familiarity with California through travel, exploring California’s unique cultural heritage and past, forming true and lasting bonds of friendship with other states and nations (both in the America’s and out), and finally through the secession of California from the United States.

“David Keanu Sai. Trained as a U.S. military officer, Sai uses the title of Chairman of the Acting Council of Regency of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Sai has done extensive historical research, especially on the treaties between Hawaiʻi and other nations, and military occupation and the laws of war. Sai is currently a doctoral candidate in political science at the University of Hawaiʻi, where he founded the Hawaiian Society of Law and Politics, which publishes the Hawaiian Journal of Law and Politics.
“Sai co-founded a Hawaiian title company, Perfect Title, which stated that all land transactions since the overthrow of the monarchy were invalid if superseded by legitimate pre-existing claims; some clients refused to make mortgage payments and lost their property. In 1997, the offices of Perfect Title were raided, and the company was barred from filing any documents with the state Bureau of Conveyances for 5 years, effectively shutting the company down. A jury on December 1, 1999, unanimously found Mr. Sai guilty of attempted theft of title to a house (value approximately $300,000) for his role as an accessory to a man and woman who used his Perfect Title services to attempt to invalidate a foreclosure on their house. For his felony conviction, David Keanu Sai was sentenced to 5 years probation and a $200 fine on March 7, 2000. His appeal was denied by the Hawaii Supreme Court on July 20, 2004.”--from Wikipedia

"Restoring Hawai'i's independence is clearly legal, justified, and possible. It is obvious that the existing political and economic systems of the State of Hawaii, aside from being illegal, are not responsible to the just and timely advancement of peoples' rights and livelihoods, nor the sustainability of our environment. In fact, the existing government by and large represents the interests of entities which destroy our future without regard for the eventual costs to our children. Discontent with the government is at an all time high. If we keep going in the same direction, we'll certainly end up where we're headed, which would be most unfortunate. This is not a specific critique of individuals in office; it is a call to awaken responsible and ethical participation in the inevitable transition of governing authority in Hawai'i.
"In Hawai'i and globally, our human 'ohana (family) is an a crisis of living, unable to meet the basic needs of the people in a sustainable manner. We the people of Hawai'i are in a process of non-violent positive change designed to prevent further economic and environmental crisis in our region and in our world. Working together we can co-evolve a relatively corruption-free form of self-government that implements natural laws in a manner consistent with the realization of equality and liberty for all people in Hawai'i.
"Independence means more than just political independence. Currently we live in a highly dependent society, relying on outside sources, primarily the United States, to meet most of our basic needs. We import over three quarters of our food, and even more of our energy, despite the fact that we inhabit the most isolated land mass in the world. Therefore Hawai'i is subject to the control of outside forces, lacking self-reliance and suffering great vulnerability. Hawai'i must become more independent in many ways to ensure the future stability and security of our land and people."

Ka Lahui Hawai'i

(Haunani-Kay Trask; Mililani Trask)
Est’d 1987.“Ka Lahui is a Native initiative - it is something that developed from grassroots Hawaiians. It is based on a democratic constitution, created by Native Hawaiians. Citizenship is open to all Hawaiians and honorary citizenship is offered to non- Hawaiians. Only full citizens can vote and hold office. The Constitution identifies four branches of government: the Executive, the Legislative, the Judiciary and the Ali'i Nui. Leadership is elected by the citizens of the 33 districts statewide where Hawaiians live. Provisions for initiative, referendum and recall are included in the Constitution. Ka Lahui Hawai'i is separate from the state government and controls its own internal affairs. Therefore, Ka Lahui Hawai'i is not subject to state control.
“Ka Lahui Hawaii is the evolutionary product of three generations of Hawaiians who have sought to regain their Native lands and to re-establish themselves as a self-governing people. Its government structure is democratic in nature, its political process is the elective process, and its cultural process is Lokahi.”

Ka Pakaukau
(Richard Kekuni Akana Blaisdell)

“Dr. Richard Kekuni Akana Blaisdell is a medical doctor and professor of medicine who strongly advocates for the total independence for Hawai'i. The position of Dr. Blaisdell's group, Ka Pakaukau, is that Hawaiʻi does not need to secede from the U.S., for the U.S. has the moral obligation to  return what it has stolen  and to remove its  occupying forces  (i.e. the U.S. military) from Hawaiian lands. Blaisdell advocates putting continual non-violent pressure on the U.S. military to vacate Hawai'i. He also feels that the military has an unmet obligation to clean up the pollution it has left in areas such as Pearl Harbor and Kaho'olawe. Blaisdell has traveled numerous times to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland to advocate for international recognition of Hawai'i as a rightful independent nation under illegal colonial occupation, and to lobby for international assistance with the process of decolonization.
“In 1993, Blaisdell convened Ka Ho'okolokolonui Kanaka Maoli, the  People's International Tribunal , which brought indigenous leaders from around the world to Hawaiʻi to put the U.S. Government on trial for the theft of Hawai'i's sovereignty, and other related violations of international law. The tribunal found the U.S. guilty, and published its findings in a lengthy document filed with the U.N. Committees on Human Rights and Indigenous Affairs.”--Wikipedia

"The Living Nation Campaign, spearheaded by Mel Kalahiki, calls us to remember what came before and why. The Living Nation celebrates the people as the nation, still here after a century of attempts by settlers to wash us away with false information and creative history. In a real sense, those who would keep us bound to an incorrect history resist the truth in the same way that we have always resisted the falsehoods. We can sympathize. But our responsibility is to our Nation, to the people, lands, and resources that must thrive in order for the Nation to be strong. To this end we strive to create opportunities ‘to provide an affirmative national voice by promoting the prosperity and dignity of the Hawaiian kingdom.’
"In 1993, President Clinton and the US Congress formally apologized for the illegal act of war, acknowledging that Hawaiian nationhood and sovereignty has in fact never been extinguished.
"We intend to show Hawai`i, the United States and the world that we are a living nation indeed and we will accept nothing less than our full independence returned,’ declared Kalahiki."

Being historically situated at the global turning point of Peak Oil, The Novacadia Alliance recognizes that industrial civilization is not merely in decline, but that it has entered the end-game. It is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that a civilization has outstripped its energy foundations, outlived its institutional purposes, and collapsed. As such, The Novacadia Alliance acknowledges the following:
*      Burdened with non-sustainable energy carrying capacities and gargantuan institutional complexities, the United States and Canada will implode upon themselves and dissolve as nation states during the current century;
*      Regional jurisdictional survival and re-invention trump vacant political posturing, and that the political vacuum spawned by the latter states-of-affair begs to be filled;
*      In the American New England and Canadian Maritime regions, the optimum size for undertaking the latter post-industrial political, economic and cultural re-invention encompasses the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and the American states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Recognizing the historical primacy and necessity of decentralization and secession, The Novacadia Alliance proposes the creation of a new Maritime political party to embark on such mandate called The Novacadia Independence Party, with optional party membership for American citizens written into the party's bylaws.

"The Free State Project is an effort to recruit 20,000 liberty-loving people to move to New Hampshire. We are looking for neighborly, productive, tolerant folks from all walks of life, of all ages, creeds, and colors who agree to the political philosophy expressed in our Statement of Intent, that government exists at most to protect people's rights, and should neither provide for people nor punish them for activities that interfere with no one else.
"When you sign our Statement of Intent, you signal your commitment to move to the chosen free state, New Hampshire, within five years of obtaining 19,999 other people who commit to move. The more signatures we get, the more secure people can be in their decision to move, because they know that many other people will also be moving— enough to make a real difference! You don't have to wait until we have 20,000 signatures to move, of course, but that option is there to let you be more secure in your decision.
"What the Free State Project is not... We are not a political action organization. We are not tied to any political party or organization; we do not run candidates for election, we do not financially support or endorse candidates, and we do not oppose or endorse legislation. All these things will be done by friendly organizations with which many Free Staters are involved."

"It is with a deep sense of regret, and a profound feeling of loss, that we must reluctantly recommend to the citizens of New Hampshire that our state declare its independence from the Federal Union. As concerned citizens, we do not take such a drastic recommendation lightly. This website has been drafted for the purpose of explaining the reasons which compel us to advise such a drastic step. It is hoped that you will consider the evidence in the same spirit of reflection with which it has been presented.”

"The Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) was founded in 1946 with the purpose of seeking and obtaining independence by every pacific mean available. The PIP is committed to achieving Puerto Rico's national freedom and laying the foundation for a sound, responsible transition from our present day colonial government to full-flegged independence.
"Independence is the right of our people to rule in their own homeland empowered by a constitution which will set the framework for our democratic government. Puerto Rico's constitution will protect human rights, our language and our nationality. Independence is the enjoyment of sovereignty, which is a key element to achieve significant economic development. Sovereignty will provide us with the power to stimulate our national industry, agriculture, commerce; regulate immigration and negotiate international treaties which permit the expansion of our markets and promote foreign investment in Puerto Rico.
"The United States House of Representatives has passed several bills that define Puerto Rico's independence in accordance to the Puerto Rican Independence Party's (PIP) definition of sovereignty. A vote for independence is a petition to the United States Congress to recognize that Puerto Rico should end its present colonial status and constitute a sovereign republic; that Puerto Rico should have plenary powers over its national territory and international relations, subject only to its own constitution, which will provide for a republican form of government that will guarantee and protect human rights. Under independence, Puerto Ricans will become citizens of the Republic of Puerto Rico, although United States citizenship (imposed by the U.S. Congress in 1917) will be retained by those who wish to keep it.
"With respect to economic matters, the definition of independence dictates that the United States will honor those benefits which persons in Puerto Rico have enjoyed as a result of their service and/or monetary contribution to the United States before the proclamation of independence. Such directives apply to Social Security, Medicare and veterans' pensions.
"The independence of Puerto Rico will lead to the negotiation of a treaty of cooperation with the United States which will stay in effect throughout a transition period. Such treaty will include economic aid for Puerto Rico which will enable the country to transform its present dependent economy into a productive and sustainable economic model. The treaty will also dictate free commerce between Puerto Rico and the United States, in addition to guaranteeing free transit between both nations. Finally, said treaty will include a process of negotiation which will lead to the withdrawal of all U.S. Military personnel from Puerto Rico and achieve the eventual demilitarization of the  country."

"The League of the South is a Southern Nationalist organization whose ultimate goal is a free and independent Southern republic. To reach this goal, we intend to create the climate for a free South among our people by 1) de-legitimating the American Empire at every opportunity; 2) by proving our willingness to be servant-leaders to the Southern people; and 3) by making The League of the South a strong, viable organization that will lead us to Southern independence.
"While our overall strategy--short, medium, and long range--is determined by the President, the Board, and our State Chairman, our tactical operational focus is on the local level. We intend to form active chapters in every county in every Southern State, and as many chapters as possible in non-Southern States. We also encourage individuals and families to personally secede from the corrupt and corrupting influence of post-Christian culture in America. We call this "abjuring the realm," and it's a real and dramatic first step all of us can take by simply withdrawing our support of and allegiance to a regime that has imperiled our future.
"While we seek to use shame and contempt to de-legitimate the institutions controlled by the Empire, we must not stop there. We must create our own parallel institutions to which our people can attach their loyalties. A good example of this is the move out of the "public" schools and into home schooling or the establishment of our own private academies. Also, the League sponsors weekend Hedge Schools and week-long summer institutes to educate our people.
"At present, the League is more concerned with resurrecting our cultural base than with entering into the political arena. Once our Southern culture is re-established, then the political issues will begin to take care of themselves. Good leaders flow naturally out of a healthy culture; however, power-hungry, self-seeking politicians are all we can expect from the debased cultural climate we have today.
LOS Statement on Racism
[The League of the South has never before issued a statement denying that it is "racist" because racism is a wax nose charge. Those who resort to this charge can never be satisfied. The more we deny it, the more we will be forced to deny it, until at last all that we will have time to do is to repel the latest charge of "racism." However, we make this one statement, to satisfy strangers of good will, that we bear no ill will or hatred to any racial, ethnic, or religious group.
[We believe that Christianity and social order require that all people, regardless of race, must be equal before the law. We do not believe that the law should be used to persecute, oppress, or favour any race or class.
[We believe that the only harmony possible between the races, as between all natural differences among human beings, begins in submitting to Jesus Christ's commandment to "love our neighbours as ourselves." That is the world we envision and work for.
[We believe that the politics of race -- baiting whites against blacks and blacks against white has been profitable for politicians but catastrophic for the South and Southerners.
[We believe that black Southerners want and need what we want and need: a safe country for their families, liberty, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
[We believe that the last thing the South's enemies want is to see black and white Southerners sitting down together to determine their common destiny and work for authentic harmony, a just social and economic order, and an independent South. We can't foretell precisely what that order will look like, but certainly it will not make room for diversity police and political correctness. Rather, we hope it will bring the greatest freedom for the greatest number of all races, and good will among them all.

“The Southern National Congress is designed as a forum in which Southerners can come together to raise an authentic voice for the traditional liberties, culture, and welfare of the Southern people. The SNC will provide an alternative, legitimate means of expressing Southern goals, grievances, and solutions in a way that does not presently exist. The SNC will provide an antidote to the disenfranchisement of those Southerners who refuse to bow the knee to centralized, unaccountable, runaway government in Washington. Neither of the two major political parties truly represents the South’s interests or welfare. The SNC seeks to fill that void, arising from the belief that we Southerners, while seeking God’s favour and guidance, have to start taking responsibility for ourselves.”

"ChristianExodus.org is moving thousands of Christians to South Carolina to reestablish constitutionally limited government founded upon Christian principles. It is evident that the U.S. Constitution has been abandoned under our current federal system, and the efforts of Christian activism to restore our Godly republic have proven futile over the past three decades. The time has come for Christian Constitutionalists to protect our liberties in a State like South Carolina by interposing the State's sovereign authority retained under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
"The Republican Party, which once promised to reduce the overbearing size of government, after gaining the reigns of power has expanded government to unprecedented reaches. Attempts at reform have proven futile for over three decades, and do not hold promise at the national level since Republicans and Democrats alike have abandoned regard for the Constitution and the proper role of government. ChristianExodus.org offers the opportunity to try a strategy not yet employed by millions of Christian conservatives who are geographically spread out and diluted at the national level. If we really mean to return to the Christian principles of constitutional American government, we must start at the local level and accelerate the process through mass migration. This is the Christian Exodus.
"ChristianExodus.org is orchestrating the move of thousands of Christians to reacquire our Constitutional rights by electing State and local officials who will interpose on behalf of the people and refuse to enforce illegal federal acts."
